Part of MIT’s OpenCourseware program, this introduction to poker theory presented by Kevin Desmond is available absolutely free at MIT’s website. You can also take a look at Poker Theory and Analytics, or take any of the other multitude of courses available through Opencourseware.
Poker-Coach.com is a handy catalogue of poker instructors. Each entry includes a short write-up on what the instructor has to offer, how much they charge for their lessons and their direct contact details. It gives you everything you need to pick from a wide list of pro players (each with their own specialty!) including Adam Stemple, Bill Hubbard and Christian Bond.
Tom McEvoy is a seasoned poker champion, teacher and author of several widely-read books on poker. You can contact him through his website to order his books and teaching materials, or you can go straight ahead and schedule individual or group lessons.
Ivey League was founded by pro poker player Phil Ivey. He’s a regular on lists of the best coaches out there, though some of the methods employed by Ivey Poker has drawn a bit of criticism before. Still, there are many poker professionals signed up and teaching through Ivey League, which makes it worth checking out. You can find a full list of their coaches here.
Daniel Negreanu is a highly-experienced poker pro, and he’s got a real easy, no-pressure style of sharing his tips. He’s won several World Series’, been player of the year – for several years. He’s also starred in a couple of flicks and TV shows, including X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What’s cooler than that? Check out his free poker lessons, poker blog, video blog, forum or book store. Oh, and you can also download PokerStars for PC or Mac.
Pokerology should be one of your first stops if you’re looking to learn more about the art of playing poker. Most of the resources on the website are offered for free, and you can find poker lessons covering Beginner Basics, General Concepts, Bluffing and more, a huge library of poker video lessons, handy reference charts and the Pokerology forum.
Okay, well, this one technically applies to Blackjack, not Poker, but you might want to include it on your list if you’re serious about cards. The name Mike Aponte might ring a bell if you’re familiar with the MIT Blackjack Team, or if you’ve seen the flick ‘21’. Mike was the leader of the MIT Blackjack Team, and now he’ll teach you what he knows about cards – though particularly Blackjack.
Free Poker Lessons From The Pros
Where do you get your expert poker lessons?
Finding a great mentor is invaluable. As I pursue my poker goal of competing in the WSOP, I wanted to find a poker mentor to learn from.
Unfortunately, private lessons with a well-known poker mentor can be ridiculously pricey… often upwards of $100 to $150 an hour. Fortunately, there are ways to achieve substantial learning without spending substantial money. Here is how I learn from poker pros Jonathan Little and Daniel Negreanu.
Poker Mentor: Jonathan Little
One of my good friends, Tave, who was the one pushing me to play with him in the 2017 WSOP, had recommended I read Jonathan Little’s poker book: Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker to prepare.
I’ve met many skilled amateur poker players who have read these books. Furthermore, quite a few of them view the series as a fantastic resource.
This book is quite up to date with the current dynamics of tournament poker. Other poker books I’ve read sometimes give advice that has become outdated due to changes in the poker scene.
However, in this series, JLittle gives advice that is a bit more timeless, helping you establish the foundation and thinking of a great poker player. I’ve since finished reading this series, but every now and then I like to re-read specific sections to review.
Poker Mentor: Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu is probably my favorite poker player. He has a great presence on the poker table. He’s Canadian (like me). But what I find most impressive is his ability to read poker hands.

I don’t think Daniel Negreanu provides private coaching. (KidPoker, if you happen to be reading this and are open to coaching someone new, send me a message!) However, you can learn plenty by watching videos of his live play on Youtube and backtracking to determine how he came up with his reads.
Watching videos of professional poker players is very helpful. Look to learn from their betting patterns and the lines they take. Furthermore analyze how they make their reads and ultimately make decisions to fold, call and raise.
There are some slight differences between high-level poker and low-level poker (leveling and metagame) but the basics and foundation are the same across the board.
