Game Information
The South Dakota Lottery participates in Dakota Cash as well as Mega Millions, Powerball, Lotto America and Lucky for Life.
Dakota Cash is the state's very own jackpot game, with drawings held on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The top prize starts at $20,000 and increases in value until it is won. Players pay $1 for a single ticket and select five numbers from 1 to 35 or have their numbers randomly chosen for them by selecting the Quick Pick option. Here's how it all works:
Winning Tier | Prize | Odds |
---|---|---|
Match 5 of 5 | Jackpot | 1 in 324,632 |
Match 4 of 5 | $100 | 1 in 2,164 |
Match 3 of 5 | $3 | 1 in 75 |
Match 2 of 5 | $1 | 1 in 8 |
Overall odds of winning any Dakota Cash prize are approximately 1 in 7.2 |
The South Dakota Lottery also operates video lottery terminals across the state. These slot machines are centrally operated and have contributed more than $1 billion in revenue since 1989. Games include bingo, poker, blackjack and keno.

Claiming Prizes
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there have been some changes in the way you claim prizes in South Dakota. You can find updates on our dedicated Coronavirus Lottery Updates page.
Players have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes, or 180 days after the end date of the game for scratch-offs. Any prizes still unclaimed after this date will be returned to the prize pool for future South Dakota Lottery games.
Any South Dakota Lottery prize worth $100 or less can be redeemed from any authorized retailer. If you're lucky enough to win a prize worth $101 or more, you may claim by mail or visit a South Dakota Lottery office, located in Pierre, Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
If you've won a jackpot prize, you need to present the ticket to Lottery officials in person at any of the three lottery offices listed above, and if you win a Powerball or Mega Millions prize, you'll need to visit the headquarters in Pierre.
South Dakota does not levy any taxes on lottery winnings, but prizes worth $5,000 or more will be subject to a federal withholding tax of 25 percent.

History of the South Dakota Lottery
The South Dakota Lottery was established in November 1986 by popular vote. Tickets went on sale on September 30, 1987. In 1989, the Video Lottery was established, but not without some dissatisfaction among South Dakota residents. At one point, the debate over the legality of the game resulted in a State Supreme Court case. However, the game has now been operating continuously since 1994.
South Dakota joined the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) in 1990 and started selling Lotto*America tickets in November of that year. In 1992, the game was replaced by Powerball. Dakota Cash tickets first went on sale in 1993 and the state began selling Mega Millions tickets in 2010.
Since 1987, the South Dakota Lottery has contributed over $2.1 billion to several different state funds. The recipients of lottery revenue are the State General Fund, the Property Tax Reduction Fund and the Capital Construction Fund.
Rules
Players must be at least 18 years old to play South Dakota Lottery games. Video lottery games can only be played by those who are 21 and older.
